And as translators, we’re often called upon to review our colleagues’ translations. ![]() As linguists, we have a knack for language and the rules of written communication. Karen earned a Master of Chemistry with French degree from the University of Manchester and a Diploma in French and a PhD in organic chemistry from the University of Cambridge. She is an ATA-certified French>English translator and a Fellow of the Institute of Translation and Interpreting. Karen Tkaczyk is a chemist-turned freelance translator, specializing in scientific translation. So yes, I am diversified, yet I am still a highly specialized subject-matter expert. Both may give you insights into ways we freelancers diversify and how those diversified service offerings help in difficult seasons or times of change. I discussed it in the Speaking of Translation podcast here. Multilingual Magazine’s Summer Series included this panel on Diversification. Indeed, because my success with diversification made a big difference to my year and I shared as much when people asked how things were going, there are a couple of recordings where I spoke about this topic later in the year. My editing revenue was slightly up last year on any of the previous years, and it made up a much higher percentage of my total revenue as my translation revenue took a steep dive in Q2 and Q3. I suspected that academics who couldn’t get into the lab or the field finished off half-written papers instead, though I don’t have anything to support that hunch. So what difference did offering this specialized yet diversified service make to me in 2020? Put simply, the editing work held strong and kept me going through many bad months. In reflecting on what changed due to the pandemic, I reviewed it and found that much still holds. You can find that piece on the Training for Translators blog. In February 2017 I wrote in more depth about this topic, including describing how others can get into this field. It improves both my subject-matter expertise, since I read cutting-edge research while editing these papers, and my English writing skills. ![]() Importantly, I have always felt that this area of work improved my translations. ![]() In recent years the volume rose to make up about 20% of my gross revenue-a significant part of what I do. Then I prepared a talk on the topic and it became obvious that other into-English translators were interested in adding this to their skill set. Around that time, 2015 or thereabouts, I added it to the list of things I mentioned when I say what I do. ![]() I had picked up a few regular clients (rather than one-offs, which are pleasant but not a big money-maker) and started getting word-of-mouth referrals. My website and online profiles didn’t mention it. There is perhaps more call overall for these editing services for those of us whose native language is English, but all freelancers can provide similar services for their native language.įor a decade I didn’t market myself for this non-native editing. Many people, especially people with degrees in a technical field like me, provide only that editing service. Non-native editing (also known as ESL editing) for academics who have to publish in English when that is not their native language can of course be a career in itself. That request came through my profile, where I am registered under “English (monolingual)” as well as my main translation pair. Shortly after I started translating I got my first request to edit a chemistry journal article written by an author whose native language was not English. With this in mind, we’ve invited a series of guest authors to write about the diversified service offerings that have helped their businesses to thrive, in the hopes of inspiring you to branch out into the new service offerings that may be right for you!įor as long as I’ve had my freelance business, I have been a translator who is diversified within my narrow area of subject expertise. Diversification can help us hedge against hard times. Offering multiple services in different sectors or to different clients can help steady us when storms come. The Savvy Newcomer team has been taking stock of the past year and finding that one key priority for many freelance translators and interpreters has been diversification. Appropriate usage of entitlements falls under the purview of the App Review team. I am currently using the M1 with 8gb of ram, the display managing task thingy already takes about 1.5 gb of ram for my monitor, with Vscode taking around 1. This entitlement will be welcomed by pro media apps like image and video editors. Of course, most apps don’t have such high RAM requirements. It’s also currently unclear how much additional RAM will be granted, as the per-app RAM limits vary per iOS device. ![]() The documentation for this entitlement does warn that access to additional memory is not guaranteed. Presumably with this entitlement, Procreate will be able to access significantly more than 5 GB of RAM and improve the customer experience. Select Product and then Profile as shown below. Steps for analyzing memory allocations 1. It includes tools like activity monitor, Allocations, leaks, zombies and so on. This event highlighted how the maximum available RAM for an individual application on the M1 iPad Pro is only 5 GB, or less than a third of total physical RAM on the 1 TB or 2 TB iPad Pro models. Using memory management tools We can analyze the usage of memory with the help of Xcode tool Instruments. (This meant the only advantage to buying the higher-specced model was the ability to keep more apps in memory at the same time for multitasking purposes, rather than empowering a single application.) Recently, buyers of the new iPad Pro were surprised to find that the number of layers available in a Procreate canvas was the same regardless of whether they had purchased the 8 GB RAM or 16 GB RAM model. However, some pro apps on the iPad in particular could benefit from being able to use more system resources than the average app. So, iOS has to carefully manage resources and developers must expect that their app can be ejected at any time. Unlike the Mac, iOS does not swap memory with the disk when memory runs low. Per-app RAM limits have existed in iOS since the first release. ![]() This will be especially useful on the latest-generation iPad Pro with M1 chip, where available system RAM can reach 16 GB but the standard RAM-per-app limit is only 5 GB. The change from private to public means that third-party app developers will be able to take advantage of it where appropriate. This system entitlement has existed in prior iOS versions as a private escape hatch, used by some internal processes. A newly documented entitlement will allow app developers to request privileged access to RAM on iOS and iPadOS. ![]() While the gameplay is mostly cliché, it does at least add its own little spin on things. Controls are very responsive the skaters practically move along with your finger, helping this game feel especially slick. If you're worried about potentially annoying voices breaking your concentration with embarrassing '90s catchphrases, don't be. While we're on the audio front, one thing to be especially thankful for is that the developers were wise enough to keep the player characters mostly voiceless. While you won't be listening to it on your iPod anytime soon, chances are good that you'll be bobbing your head to it long after you've put the game away. A catchy and upbeat tune accompanies your subway-surfing endeavors. The music itself harkens back to those kinds of games as well. At the same time, they bring to mind many classic platformers like Sonic Adventure and Psychonauts, which further gives them a more timeless quality. It helps that the visuals are incredibly bright, cartoony and creative the characters and scenery honestly wouldn't look too out of place in a Pixar film. It may sound like one of those lame attempts to pander to kids in the '90s, but it works surprisingly well and isn't anywhere close to obnoxious as it could have been.
